Today seen us leave Santa Rosa and head north on Highway 87, which was the pre-1937 alignment for Route 66.
We veered off to Las Vegas NM. to have a look around. Las Vegas NM. was once home to Doc Holliday, Kate Elder, Wyatt Earp and Butch Cassidy. It was also where Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper were put in jail in the classic movie “Easy Rider”.
From there we stuck to the interstate to Santa Fe, from everything we’ve read Route 66 can be hard to follow with patches of unpaved road. After a short stop in Santa Fe we headed south on the 14 to visit Maggie’s Diner from the movie “wild Hogs”. The movie site of the diner is now a gift shop selling a variety of touristy stuff both related to the movie and New Mexico in general.
After that it was on to Albuquerque to pull up for the day. We’re staying in a motel called the Quality Inn for the grand total of $66USD for twin share with a hot breakfast and free wi-fi.
Tomorrow we’ll head further west across New Mexico with one more night before going into Arizona.
